NFL Week 2 recap
Chiefs vs. Chargers
September 16th
It’s the season for a new king to take the throne and many had picked Justin Herbert as the man to do just that this season and surpass Patrick Mahomes as the game’s premier quarterback.
It seemed both were very conscious of that scuttlebut and Mahomes responded by reminding everyone why he was being touted as one of the potential all-time greats just a couple of years ago.
Mahomes wasn’t dominant but did what he had to do with his new array of receivers, scoring a touchdown in what he later described as an ugly win. Herbert on the other hand, struggled with the pressure and while the Chiefs D-line didn’t trouble him too much, it was further up the ground where he was rattled, notably on a 99-yard touchdown interception to Jaylen Watson late in the game that sealed the Chiefs’ win.
It mightn’t have been pretty but Kansas City sit undefeated after two rounds and have Indianapolis well and truly in their sights to make it three straight to kick off the season.
Bears vs. Packers
September 19th
Football’s grandest rivalry continued its one-sided recent trend with an easy win to the Packers. There was plenty of familiarity with this contest, not least the resurgence of Aaron Rodgers after a poor season opener. It wasn’t Rodgers’ most dominant performance, with a few uncharacteristic turnovers as he gets used to his new-look offence but a second-quarter purple patch netted him two touchdowns and set up the easy win against a meek Chicago defense.
Aaron Jones had an increased share of carries which may be the way for Green Bay going forward, while Justin Field could not get any momentum when the Bears had the ball, nor could running back David Montgomery, save for some final-quarter stats padding.
Bills vs. Titans
September 19th
After a comprehensive win over Superbowl champions the Rams last week, Buffalo backed it up with a devastating win over a lacklustre Titans this week.
After running away to an early lead, the Bills took the foot off the pedal, resting some key players while coasting to a 41-7 victory.
Josh Allen furthered his claims as the best Quarterback in the game, hitting Stefon Diggs 12 times for three touchdowns while Tennessee could only watch on.
The night was all about their offence but their D more than played their role, strangling the Titans at every opportunity with Matt Milano right in amongst it every chance he got.
Derrick Henry is always the dangerman when Tennessee take the field and looked set to play a big role after trucking through for an early touchdown. But before he knew it, the result was locked away. Tennessee need to get an early win before their season careers out of control and this week’s clash with fellow winless team Las Vegas poses as the perfect chance to regroup, meanwhile Buffalo’s odds of a Superbowl win continue to come in.
Eagles vs. Vikings
September 19th
Jaylen Hurts was rated by many as the Quarterback most likely to take his game to a new level this season and he has done nothing so far to call that statement into question. Both in the air and on the ground, Hurts lived up to his name and did exactly that to the hapless Vikings.
Meanwhile Kirk Cousins sadly continued his run of poor prime time games, throwing three picks around his one touchdown, while Dalvin Cook couldn’t get it going in the backfield.
Darius Slay made life hell for Minnesota, claiming two interceptions off Cousins’ arm and the second of the Monday prime-time games was done and dusted before half-time.
