Peter Gojowczyk vs. Ugo Humbert
We are set for a cracking contest between two offensive players who show no fear of stepping forward and volleying for fun.
Frenchman Ugo Humbert is clearly the more talented of the two players when looking at the rankings and odds, but he has not exactly been hitting the sweet spot of late with regards to form.
Peter Gojowczyk has been around the ATP scene for many a year now and the 32-year-old veteran hits the tournament having swept aside all before in the qualifiers.
Humbert was outdone by Frances Tiafoe at the Cincinnati Masters a fortnight ago and he does look a shade vulnerable here, especially at the short odds.
This opening round match looks a monty to get into four or five set range.
Gojowczyk has played a tie-break in three of his last five matches, while Humbert’s record for tie breakers is almost unheard of.
He’s played at least one tiebreaker in 14 of his last 16 fixtures and one of the other two games where he did not play in a tiebreak actually featured a fifth set at Wimbledon which went to 9-7.

US Open Women's Day 1 Best Bet

Simona Halep vs. Camilla Giorgi
It is probably the match that intrigues the most on the women’s side of the draw come day one of the US Open.
Simona Halep is finally back after recovering from her torn calf which left her out of the French Open and Wimbledon.
She will face stiff opposition in the form of Camilla Giorgi who is in sparkling form after taking out the Canadian Open against Karolina Pliskova earlier this month.
There has to be some sort of doubt as to whether or not Halep is at genuinely at full fitness.
The Romanian 12th seed only battled to victory in three sets against Magda Linette at the Cincinnati Masters and then pulled out of the following round with an adductor complaint.
Halep does have the victory in the locker against Giorgi when the two met for the first and only time their careers back in 2015.
That being said, Halep was at her best then and probably is a bit off that level.
