The favourites for some time leading into this tournament, Brazil is the most successful nation at the World Cup, with five previous wins. With that in mind, there has been a relative drought since its most recent success in 2002, and the football-mad nation is hungry to return to its rightful place.
Everything seems to be in place for them to win a sixth tournament with a star-studded line-up led by superstar Neymar. Add in midfield duo Fred and Casemiro. Add in Gabriel Jesus and Raphina among a supremely talented squad, and it’s hard to see where they are vulnerable.
Having dropped just one of its previous 29 games, Brazil is primed to live up to its favourite status and win here.

Argentina

Sitting in Group C, Argentina seems to be in a prime position to launch itself to World Cup success, with Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Poland unlikely to cause them too much pain in the early rounds. Lionel Messi has been the mainstay of the Argentinian team for the best part of a decade, and his glittering career is missing just one piece – a World Cup.
Messi has already announced that this will be his last World Cup and will leave nothing on the pitch in pursuing football’s biggest prize. Argentina is unbeaten in its past 35 matches, including Brazil’s scalp, and they will be right in contention here.

It hasn’t been a smooth run to the tournament with N’Golo Kanté and Paul Pogba out through injury. They still possess the elite talent of Kylian Mbappe, but some disappointing recent results have some questioning whether they can defend the Cup they won for the second time in 2018.
Denmark is their primary concern in Group D, but even if they can win that as expected, the polish of the South American contenders may be too much for them to handle.

Probably the strongest of the European contenders based on form leading into the tournament, the Spaniards have a tough group, sharing the stage with perennial contenders Germany. They have some history on their side, having won the Cup in 2010, but those days are long behind them, and they have left some big names out of their squad.
Midfielder Pedri is one of the hottest young talents in world football and is likely to elevate his status here. Alvaro Morata and Sergio Busquets will also play crucial roles if Spain is to progress deeply.

One of sport’s most famous droughts is a chance to end at this tournament with England in good shape to win its first World Cup since the famous 1966 victory.
But there are a few concerns for them to overcome, with injuries to star players an unfortunate theme of its preparation. A final performance at the 2020 Euros is fresh in the memory banks of many but that may not count for much as it navigates its way past the group stage.
Harry Kane is the main man up forward but needs support from Raheem Sterling and Callum Wilson to captain a Cup-winning team.
