The upward spike Profondo is on has him a deserved favourite in this year’s edition of the Spring Champion.
He should have been the winner of the Gloaming Stakes at only his second career start a fortnight ago, but his manners late in the event cost him the win.
He lugged in towards the rail and lost at least a length or two.
Hoping jockey Robbie Dolan has learnt a lot from that run and the rise to 2000 metres is only going to see this horse be better placed with breeding suggesting he will easily get out to this distance and potentially beyond.
Barrier ten should see Dolan press forward with this big striding colt and sit at the girth of Never Been Kissed.
The market had him installed as favourite over Head of State last start and that must be a heavily considered factor when assessing this race.
Head of State had the runs on the board and fitness edge, now he does not have that in his favour.

Ellsberg $5
Resumed with a brave first-up victory when travelling wide from barrier 12 getting his neck and nose down at the right time over 1400 metres.
The drop back in distance might actually work out well for him as he can settle from barrier six and find an easy spot behind the leaders, then use his nice turn of foot.
This horse is a proven winner at Randwick, so the change from the Rosehill surface to here will be no problem.
Tim Clark should be able to manufacture a saloon passage from the barrier as this pair look towards the Golden Eagle in a fortnight time.

Gleneagles finally gets a good barrier and the good track he has been looking for since resuming.
His two runs this preparation have seen him run on soft ground – which is not to his liking – as well as a wide barrier at Kembla Grande at his most recent outing.
Has since had a trial after running fourth behind Anamoe and he looked to travel nicely and seemed to be in very good order.
Expecting him to find the back of the odds-on favourite Paulele and hopefully just be that little bit stronger late in the race.
Regardless, he looks a genuine top three chance and his place odds are generous.

We have Ellsburg in our best bets category this weekend, but we will take some insurance in that race just incase he does not get up for us.
Profondo we will take as our sole runner in the second leg and then come home wide in the last two.
