The vacant IBF lightweight crown is up for grabs in Perth on Sunday when Ukrainian champion Vasiliy Lomachenko goes toe-to-toe with Australia’s very own George Kambosos Jr.
While the local crowd will undoubtedly offer plenty of support for Kambosos, it’s the $1.13 Lomachenko who’s been crushed by bookies and punters alike.
Lomachenko, who has won titles in three weight classes throughout his 17-3 (11 KOs) career, enters the fight on the back of a loss to Devin Haney in May. Many pundits were questioning the decision result against Haney, with the two-time Olympic gold medallist hellbent on ensuring the judges had no choice but to side with him this time.
As for Ferocious, the former unified lightweight champion must recapture his best form after producing the worst streak of his career with two losses to Haney from his last three fights. He bounced back in his most recent outing for the IBO strap against Maxi Hughes in July, but the majority decision was less convincing. While he still boasts an incredible record of 21-2 (10 KOs), it’s difficult to go past the notion that his best form may be behind him.
Despite being significantly older than Kambosas and the vocal Aussie crowd in his ear, there’s no doubt Lomachenko is the one to beat here.

Hughes vs. Johnson

Earlier on the card, WBA women’s bantamweight champion Nina Hughes will put her title on the line when she shapes up against Australia’s Cherneka Johnson.
The 41-year-old Hughes, who first claimed the title when she upset former champion Jamie Mitchell in November 2022, will now put her belt on the line for the second time. The first was in June last year when Hughes delivered a flawless performance against Katie Healy. Age might not be on Hughes’ side, but there’s no denying her 6-0 record in the ring.
The hometown favourite Johnson is a $3 outsider with Bet Nation following her last-start loss to Ellie Scotney. Prior to that, however, she’d won 15 of her previous 16 fights, resulting in the IBF World Super Bantam belt in 2022. While she’s the best part, 12 years younger than her opponent, Johnson has established herself as a star fighter in 17 professional bouts – 11 more than Hughes.
One of the tightest match-ups in the market, don’t be surprised to see the Aussie bounce back into form in front of the home crowd.
