Australia vs. England
November 17th
The three-match One Day International Series between cricket’s oldest rivals has already hit a snag with Glenn Maxwell breaking his leg over the weekend. He will be out of this tournament and much of the summer beyond it in a massive blow to the Australians.
This will be Pat Cummins’s first series as the permanent Australian captain, and he will be keen for instant results following the team’s poor showing at the T20 World Cup.
Travis Head will also come in as part of the opening partnership with David Warner following Aaron Finch’s retirement.
The England squad is riding high after winning the World Cup, and even though it’s a different format of the game, much of its in-form squad will carry over into this match.
Jos Buttler will once again captain the team and open the batting, with his big hitting sure to be a significant factor throughout this series.
Sam Billings and James Vince come into the team, bringing with them plenty of experience on Australian soil from their time in the BBL. Ben Stokes and Mark Wood are two big names missing from the squad, but there is a depth to the England team that probably has them as the superior side here. Sam Curran and Adil Rashid are bowling at their career best, claiming wickets and keeping the run rate low, while Chris Woakes still brings plenty of value as he approaches veteran status.
Big things are expected from Australian Cameron Green, with many suggesting he could be the game’s next big all-rounder. His long levers with the bat and pace and bounce with the ball make him a prized asset, and this could well be the summer he takes the step up that so many are expecting.
Steve Smith and Mitchell Starc are the senior members of the team and may face some pressure from the Australian public crying out for an injection of youth.
But there is no bigger incentive for an Australian team out of form than the prospect of taking on a confident, possibly cocky England team on their home soil.
Both teams have been up and down regarding the 50-over game in 2022, and the form lines are hard to read. But the Australians have a big point to prove, and England could be due for a bit of a lapse after the elation of their T20 tournament win.
